September is a tough time of year, no matter how you slice it. Our hearts especially go out to those sweet families and children who are starting Kindergarten! It’s a new place, new people, and the beginning of a new part of life. No matter the grade, your child’s wellbeing is incredibly important to you and you want this to be as positive of an experience as possible. Every parent that sends their child to school goes through these September transitions, and they’re hard! You’re not alone.
Yoga can help you and your child with all transitions, even starting school! Notice how I said ‘you’ - as a parent our histories, beliefs, and way we move through life greatly affects our children. In my experience of sending my oldest off to kindergarten, I realized that mostly i’m not ok - and my child is mostly just fine!
Ultimately it’s about creating a lifestyle of health for your family. Practicing your own yoga and yoga with your child centres you both and will greatly help them in their growing years. As I’ve said before, I wish I had yoga as a child!
Here are a few ways yoga can help a child at any age start school:
1. Confidence - At Appleseed, your child is accepted and loved just as they are. Their whole self is celebrated, including their differences! Building on their poses and skills each week through games and fun stories creates a safe space for our kids to grow and build confidence.
2. Positive Self-Talk - Throughout class and especially during meditation and relaxation, children are led through inspiring imagery that focuses on all that’s beautiful, right and good in them. These truths settle deep in their whole bodies and over time become part of their inner dialogue! That’s the kind of thing I want my 4 year old to remember when he’s at school and misses me.
3. Deeper Connection - At our Toddler and Family Yoga classes, families stay together to strengthen and deepen our bonds with each other. Touch, play, and resting together creates a sense of mutual trust between you and your child(ren). Your child knows they are with you, has your attention, and is in a safe place. Quality time together will fill their reserves and assure them when you’re apart that you love them.
4. A Positive Relationship with Rest - Yay for REST! When our children are in school, they get TIRED. Especially in the early years, during the after school hours they are starving and exhausted, which can make for a tricky bedtime (delaying the sleep they desperately need). If they have established rest rituals and see rest as positive, this can greatly support their overall health and make the evenings more positive for everyone.
All the best in your unique transition to school this September!

Pose of the Summer: Jellyfish
Jellyfish Pose (Uttanasana)
Summer is here finally and as I anticipated, the heat has arrived with a vengeance. Not going to lie, our family is made up of winter-lovers, and although the shedding of the layers is very welcome, we intentionally make time in our routines for cooling down. The pressure and anticipation of the summer sometimes leaves me feeling disappointed when all the plans don’t pan out, but mostly i’m just so incredibly happy to have…

Summer is here finally and as I anticipated, the heat has arrived with a vengeance. Not going to lie, our family is made up of winter-lovers, and although the shedding of the layers is very welcome, we intentionally make time in our routines for cooling down. The pressure and anticipation of the summer sometimes leaves me feeling disappointed when all the plans don’t pan out, but mostly i’m just so incredibly happy to have my school-aged honey home and more family time!
Jellyfish is the pose of Summer. Did you know jellyfish have been around for at least 500 million years? Some glow-in-the-dark, AND they can clone themselves!
Benefits
Jellyfish pose is calming, relieves stress and helps improve digestion. It also stretches out the back of the body and strengthens the thighs and knees. I love using this pose to decompress my spine and relieve mild headaches. When things get overwhelming sometimes it can help to find a new perspective by literally turning your heart and head upside down!
Do it!
Jellyfish is simple to do, but staying for a while (as an adult) is not easy! But kids loooove this pose. Stand tall with knees slightly bent and fold at the hips. As your hands come closer to the ground, your knees can bend as much as you need in order to have your tummy close to your thighs while still staying comfortable. Take a few intentional breaths and shake your head a little.
Have Fun!
Is your jellyfish a giant-sized deep ocean dweller, or a pocket-sized baby washed up on a sandy beach? Float your arms in all directions slowly and bend each knee - your arms and legs are your tentacles trailing you as you propel yourself through the water. Let your head go and swing it too! Jellyfish eat small fish and some bring them up to their mouths with the use of their tentacles. What is your jellyfish eating for dinner tonight? Yum!
Here's to sunscreen, scraped knees, and swimming everyday to avoid the bath,
Happy Summer!

What Your Toddler Really Wants

This little rainbow baby of mine makes my heart explode often. His love for movement and natural agility blows us away - not to mention moments like these when I know his weekly yoga classes are creating a deep and lasting impact on his life. (I caught him here in legs up the wall by his own accord just a few weeks after his second birthday.)
It’s true, you may bring your child to Toddler Yoga and never stop wondering why you’re there and what good it’s doing because your child is running in circles during savasana (and the teacher is happy about it).
But these healthy patterns and environments don’t create impact in just 45 minutes one time on a wet Saturday morning in April. It’s consistency, community, and the family connection over time that makes yoga what it is.
And kids get it. Toddlers get it. They love and crave this freedom, this play with their parents and siblings, this creative space where they can be themselves.
A place to freely be themselves.

Pose of the Season: Spring
Butterfly Pose (Baddha Konasana)
After being sick and mostly home for what seemed like weeks, I emerged from the house into a world of spring! Talk about a renewal of my cells and the world around me. The snow is mostly gone and i’m pretty sure my parka is going away this weekend. One of my most favourite things in the world is my boys and I wearing our warm wool sweaters, comfy pants, and rain boots while breathing in the cool moist air and exploring the muddy and wet world outside.
Butterfly is the pose of spring this year. Did you know butterflies have taste receptors on their feet and their wings are made of…

Butterfly is the pose of spring this year. Did you know butterflies have taste receptors on their feet and their wings are made of tiny scales?
Benefits
The benefits of butterfly pose are fantastic, especially opening those hips after a long winter! This pose also helps to stimulate the abdominal organs, reproductive organs, bladder and kidneys, as well as open the heart and stimulates circulation. This pose is known to help with depression and anxiety and also stretches the inner thighs, groin, and knees. These are all things that aid in our health as we transition from winter to the warmer seasons.
Do it!
Butterfly is simple to do, even babies and toddlers love it. Sit in a comfortable seat and bring the soles of your feet to touch in front of you. Position your heels in a comfortable spot, maybe closer to your seat or farther away, you decide! Grow your spine nice and tall, if you feel your pelvis rocking back, sit up on a blanket or cushion. To fly your butterfly, bounce your knees up and down, these are your colourful wings flapping!
Have Fun!
Where will your butterfly fly - are you a Monarch flying south? If your butterfly gets tired, it can go to sleep by bringing your nose down close to your toes. Your butterfly may also stretch out to create bigger wings - just grab your big toes and stretch out your legs long while balancing on your seat! Falling over is part of the fun, how far back can you lean before you fall? Partner butterfly is a blast too, just sit back to back with a friend or family member and float your wings. What colour is your butterfly? Fly with your sensitive antennas, just place your fists on either side of your head - pointer fingers out long! Or maybe you’re a swarm of butterflies with your friends and family!
Do you have another creative expression of butterfly pose?? We’d love to hear it!
Here's to wet umbrellas, cleaning up, and taking a deep breath when the mud abounds,
Happy Spring!

Starting your family’s weekend with a yoga class at Appleseed gives you time to reconnect after a long week. Here are 5 other reasons your family will LOVE Saturday Yoga:
Family Time. At our Saturday classes, you always remain with your child. This means you get in serious family time and needn’t worry about if your child feels comfortable in class.
Always Drop-In. Our drop-in classes are convenient for you! If you need to visit family, someone is sick, or there’s a giant snow-storm, you can miss a class with no penalty.
Burns Energy. Your child will be tired out after yoga! Cheers to a solid nap or low-key Saturday afternoon for the whole family.
Uniqueness. Our programming at Appleseed is unique, no doubt about it. We are constantly using our creative imaginations, building inspiring stories, and connecting to ourselves, each other, our community at large, and the earth. Where else do all these things happen?
FAMILY SAVASANA. If you haven’t been to an Appleseed class yet, I can’t wait to show you our typical savasana. After a class of fun, sweat, and laughter, you will be overjoyed to rest alongside your family. Snuggle time comes with cushions, blankets, sweet music, foot massages and a surprising amount of stillness!
We look forward to seeing you soon! Toddler Yoga is at 9am and Family Yoga is at 11:30am each and every Saturday.
